Tongass National Forest

We chose to fly in a small air-taxi from Juneau to Gustavus, which took us over the Tongass National Forest. Here's a picture taken out of the window of the plane. We're looking at one of the islands in the Alexander Archipelago.. I couldn't tell you which one, but they are covered with the most beautiful and pristine rainforests in the world.

The plane was a 6 seater, so everyone had a spectacular view. The water below us was clear enough to spot a whale, swimming along below.

The B&B is cozy and warm. All the wood and the maple floor are stunning. The Alaskan artwork is beautiful. We felt at home right away. Eskimo Art
wildflowers Wildflowers were blooming along the roads, in the fields, even in the rainforest and along the beach. Berries were in flower, promising a good crop later.

We went for a bike ride around this quaint little town, met some of the locals and saw several interesting things.

horse and buggy
Not much traffic here, but Kate and her buggy were a fine sight.

moose calf It was quite a thrill to come upon a moose on our ride. I think he (she?) was as surprised to see us as we were to see him/her. We stopped and just stood there - we and Bullwinkle took a bit of time to view eachother, then went our separate ways. We think this was a young one - partly because it semed to have no fear or anxiety at meeting us, and also because of the skinny little legs. Though it looked big to us, we were told it would grow to about twice the size at maturity. The moose feed on willow and small trees, and of course the vegetables in local folks' gardens... broccoli - yummm.

It was a surprise to come upon a golf course - check it out.

The next day, we headed out to see Glacier Bay - first Bartlett Cove, where the Lodge and Park headquarters are located, where we hiked a nature trail and where we board the boat to go into the bay.

And finally we enjoyed an evening at the lodge - exhibits, naturalist slide show, movie, gift shop and a magnificent sunset over Bartlett Cove as we enjoyed dinner and good company in front of the fireplace.

We took the Alaska airlines jet back to Juneau, ending a fantastic visit to Gustavus and Glacier Bay.
